Your Guide to various Frequencies in Walkie-Talkie

Keeping in mind the features and abilities of a walkie talkie, two-way radio devices are one of the best modes of communication and the best quality walkie talkies allow you to establish the most efficient connection throughout the organization. To make the best use of the device it is very important for you to understand the various frequencies in which a walkie-talkie works.

So, here is a complete guide for you which will help you to understand the basics of the two-way radio frequencies:

There are two ways in which a walkie-talkie works – either on a licensed frequency or a license-free frequency. If you are looking to use the two-way radio for any commercial use, you need to purchase a license through the Wireless Planning and Coordination Wing of India.

License Free Frequency

As the name states, you can operate the license free walkie talkie without any license from the government. A license-free radio can be operated indoors as well as outdoors, but the range of communication will differ accordingly.

Depending on the surroundings the range of the device can differ from a few hundred meters to a few kilometers. The maximum range goes to 2 to 2.5 km in open surroundings.

In India, for wireless communication, you can only transmit in some specific frequency ranges without any license:

  • 26.957 MHz to 27.383 MHz (Citizen Band)
  • 335 MHz (for cranes’ remote controls)
  • 2.4 GHz to 2.4835 GHz (WIF, Bluetooth)

These are some of the license-free bands and one of the most common out of these is 26.957 MHz to 27.383 MHz but is allowed to be used at the maximum 1W power. This is known as the Citizen Band which is a High-Frequency Band (HF) open for citizens.

The Indian CB plan consists of a total of 40 frequencies.

The CB band channel is a shared channel and is used a number of users at the same time. Only one station is supposed to transmit at a time and the others are supposed to listen to maintain a fluent connection.

Licensed Frequency

By using a license-free frequency you can gain connectivity of up to 2.5 km, but if you think this is not enough for your requirement, do not worry, the WPC (Wireless Planning and Coordination Wing) has a way out of this problem for you.

You can apply and receive a license by the WPC for your amateur radio (ham) to make use of the wide range of HF (High Frequency), VHF (Very High Frequency) and UHF (Ultra-Wide Frequency) and get connected to the other hams likes you throughout the globe.

Do not worry, getting this license in India is a very easy process, once you get your license you are ready to use your long range walkie talkies as per your requirement.
